NOTES:
I've selected certain relevant lyrics which I think relate to Jao and Areeyah's relationship. Although, I will admit that it is more from the perspective of Jao. Catharsis under the cut.
At first, I wanted it to be a reflection on Jao and Areeyah's path at the end of the TV series, specifically, the last two episodes where Areeyah decides to accept Jao's request to marry him and lead as King and Queen over Yangdon. The scene where they talk, although you wouldn't call it a conversation because one participant (Areeyah) was not really listening to the other (Jao). I just thought that she was not acting as a Princess when they talked to each other. She shot down everything he said and not even bothered to view it from his perspective. If she had just opened her eyes, she'd know that he was doing it more for the Kingdom than for his apparent selfish need to be bound to her.
I’ll bleed for you
Yes, I know that he wants her to marry him (even going so far as to 'blackmail' her to it in exchange for her father's life and Gino's freedom). He even said that it is time for his wants to come true. But I could see him hesitate. And there were times when you could see the old Jao shining through. The Jao who cares about others that he puts their interests above his own. Jao may seem to act vengeful towards Areeyah, but I believe it was all an act to ensure that his mother would not be suspicious of him and to make sure that Areeyah was safe. There was a scene where his mother, 'Queen' Behati said that she would not rest until Princess Areeyah's head was presented to her, and the camera cuts to Jao's face and you could see the worry and terror clear for all the world to see.
Anyway, this turned out to apply to their relationship in general but with emphasis on the later happenings.
Jao has loved Areeyah since he spent time with her in Yangdon when she had a school trip to the country as a prize in a competition. At first, they bantered with each other. With Areeyah (then still Mikay Maghirang) calling him "masungit" (irritable) and saying that it's a waste because he is "guapo" (handsome). Then Jao surprised her by saying that he understood the word "guapo".
He reluctantly becomes her tour guide after he tells the king that she has been bothering him.
They go around the scenic spots in Yangdon, Jao being put in his place by Mikay. Unexpectedly, they have fun and their developing friendship is cut short because Mikay has to return to the Philippines. But not before she leaves her camera which Jao finds and vows to return to her, knowing how happy she was to take pictures on her trip.
Fast forward a couple of months worth of episodes, Mikay has been reinstated as Princess Areeyah, Ashi Behati (Jao's mother) plots to take the throne from her by uncovering an old law stating that a Princess had to marry at her 18th birthday (she wants Areeyah to marry Jao), the Drukpa (royal council) authorize a competition for the Princess' hand in marriage, and Mikay is confused because Gino, a reformed bad-boy classmate who is interested in her has made an appearance at Yangdon and was found to be the 'half-brother' of Jao.
Jao doesn't want to force Areeyah to marry him and makes a promise to her that he would win the competition so that they could both go and present their plea to the Drukpa. Areeyah slowly starts to see him in a different light. She sees that he really cares about the Kingdom and their people, that he is thoughtful and kind. She realizes that her feelings for him have changed and near the end of the competition, where it is just down to Jao and Gino, she finds herself worried for Jao.
Jao manages to win the competition and presents the royal medallion to Areeyah whereby she promptly announces that she freely chooses Jao to be her betrothed.
It would have been the best to end the series at that and save me a lot of pain. But no, the "so-called majority" wanted another ending. They wanted Areeyah to end up with Gino, so two months worth of episodes were added. Two months of pain and heartache.
The fact that Ashi Behati ordered the assassination of Areeyah's mother comes to light. Her and Jao's heritage is discovered. They are the last remaining descendants of the ruler of a rival Kingdom which was assimilated into the current Yangdon after Ashi Behati's father (the King) was killed.
Areeyah pleads with her father for leniency but her father is adamant in meting out his punishments. Jao and Ashi Behati are banished to the gulag for the rest of their lives. Areeyah goes to Jao and tells him to meet her at a certain place before he is sent off to the gulag.
She waits for him at the appointed place but he doesn't arrive. Jao and Behati have been caught by armed men and Jao hears his mother's cries for help as she is being dragged away from him.
When he comes to after being beaten almost to death, he sees a newly-dug grave and figures that it must be of his mother's. He passes out before he can dig it up and when he wakes up he is in Barangay Masantol (a sort-of mini Yangdon-Silangan community in the Philippines).
Areeyah is distraught. She dreams of Jao toiling in the gulag. She is becoming despondent day-by-day so the King tasks Gino with making her forget Jao. Gino takes her on trips around Yangdon but Areeyah continues to be sad until Gino yells at her to stop feeling sad all the time. Areeyah responds that she can't stop feeling sad because she remembers Jao in everything she sees in Yangdon, so Gino devises a plan to take her back home to the Philippines to visit her adoptive parents.
Her parents live in the province, a few towns away from, you guessed it, Barangay Masantol. Gino knows that a way for Areeyah to forget Jao is to propose to her (naturally, since he was the runner-up in the competition). Areeyah smilingly accepts but she doesn't know that they have an audience to their little lovefest. Jao has seen everything. He was delivering sacks of rice (for that was what he was doing to earn a living) and he happened to look through a window and see Areeyah and Gino. He sees her smiling and accepting Gino's proposal. She's happy and it's like being stabbed in the chest.
Here she was. So close, yet so far.
Happy with another man.
Forgetting him already.
He can't do anything because he wants her to be happy. That's what he always wanted for her.
And deep inside he has doubts. Shivaje had asked him why he was in the woods when he was attacked and he had reluctantly said that Areeyah told him to meet her there.
He walks away from the house containing the happy couple. He begins to do things which are self-destructive because for the life of him, he's got nothing to live for. He acts like a zombie. He wants to be numb because everything hurts at the moment.
He knows that he can't go to her. He's supposed to be banished, if the King knew where he was, maybe he'd even get killed, or worse, his people (the people of Masantol) would be punished.
He vows to live his life for the people and for the children of Barangay Masantol, teaching them football and such.
He's trying to quietly live his life when it all goes to hell with the appearance of Areeyah and Gino on a charity/aid mission in Barangay Masantol.
**I could go on but I don't think I'd be able to articulate my feelings clearly. You'd best watch the show and see for yourself. Not for the downward spiral of the plot, but for Enrique Gil's acting skills. Kudos to Enrique for making me sympathize with his character and for making me cry alot. ;_;
RELEVANT LYRICS:
1.) A New Tattoo - Urbandub
I’ll bleed for you
Like a new tattoo
in my heart
You’ll stay permanent
Am I too late now?
Will I find a way to get you somehow
She’s breaking me down again
She’s breaking me down
2.) Ako Na Lang - Zia Quizon
Nandito lang ako
How I wish you’d let me know
Ako na lang sana
Tayo na lang dal’wa
Sana nalaman mo pala
Ako na lang sana
3.) Time Stands Still - All American Rejects
He walks her home
Now he walks alone
The days they turn into years
The eyes they drown in tears
The way we are the way we were
(It’s just a shadow of what’s wrong)
The time with you the time is stirred
(I love you for, so long)
4.) Princess of China - Coldplay featuring Rihanna
Once upon a time, we burned bright
Now all we ever seem to do is fight
On and on…
And on and on and on…
Once upon a time on the same side.
Once upon a time on the same side, in the same game
And why’d you have to go, have to go and throw water on my flame
Cause you really hurt me
5.) I Can’t Make You Love Me/Nick Of Time - Bon Iver
‘Cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t
Here in the dark in these final hours
I will lay down my heart if I feel the power
But you don’t,
No, you don’t
I’ll close my eyes then I won’t see
The love you don’t feel when you’re holding me
Morning will come and I’ll do what’s right
Just give me ‘till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
I found love darling, darling, darling
Love in the nick of time
6) Endless, A Silent Whisper - Urbandub
Is it in vain? Is it too late?
Is this the beginning of our last dance?
Once around the floor, can we do it again?
Heaven sheds tears for the wounded hearts
Our forever has been torn apart
Our vast religions
Won’t help us answer
What was pre-destined for us to have
Since long ago.
It’s hopeless.
7.) Hiling - Paramita
Nanlalamig na ba ang pag-ibig mo sa ‘kin…
Nalilito ako, nais kong sagipin ang atin
Nalulunod na pag-ibig
Nguni’t handa akong palayain ka
Kung ito ang ‘yong hiling
Gaano man kasakit sa akin
Ibibigay sa yo
Ang tanging pakiusap lang
Wag mo akong kalimutan..
Kakayanin pa kayang mabawi pa
Ang mga nasabi nang masasakit na salita…
8.) Signal Fire - Snow Patrol
All I wanted just sped right past me,
While I was rooted fast to the earth,
I could be stuck here for a thousand years,
Without your arms to drag me out.
In the confusion and the aftermath,
You are my signal fire.
The only resolution and the only joy,
Is the faint spark of forgiveness in your eyes.
9.) Maalala Mo Sana - Silent Sanctuary
Ibubulong ko na lamang sa alapaap ang sigaw ng damdamin ko
Sulyapan mo lang sana ang langit
Baka sakaling marinig ng puso mo ang tinig ko
Maalala mo sana ako dahil noon pa man
Sa’yo lang nakalaan ang pag-ibig ko
Bawat sandali na ikaw ay kasama
Para bang di na tayo muling magkikita
10.) Nag-iisang Bituin - Angeline Quinto

Tayong dalawa
